Gentle warmth at one point

Moxibustion warms a spot with dried mugwort, either as a small cone on a protective base, or as a stick held a little above the skin. It is added to a visit only when you ask for it, and it can be done without any needle. There is a mild smell, like dried herbs, and we open a window.

A rolled white towel, a small candle holder and a dried branch on a wooden tray on a treatment table.

What to expect

  • Who usually comes

People who like heat, who feel the cold in their hands, feet or low back, or who want a visit with no needles at all.

  • A visit, in order

Added to a regular visit, usually about 10 minutes.

    • We ask whether smoke or smell bothers you

    • We warm one point at a time

    • You say when it is warm enough

    • We remove the cone or stick and check the skin

  • What you may feel afterward

Warmth that lingers, and sometimes a light pink spot where the heat was. We stop if the heat gets sharper than you want.

  • Tell us first

Tell us about asthma, a sensitivity to smoke or smells, numb skin, diabetes, pregnancy, or if you are on blood thinners. We use a stick instead of a cone, or skip it.

    • Asthma or smoke sensitivity

    • Numb or thin skin

    • Diabetes

    • Pregnancy

  • How many visits

Moxibustion is a part of a visit, not a course of its own. We add it when it helps you relax, and leave it out when it does not.

  • What it does not do

This does not replace your doctor or your medicines. Never stop or change a medicine on your own; talk to the person who prescribed it. Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, or the worst headache of your life.
