Fine needles, placed shallow

Japanese-style acupuncture uses needles about as thin as a strand of hair. They go in a few millimeters, often for under a minute, and most visits use a handful rather than dozens. Your acupuncturist chooses points by feeling your pulse, your belly and the tender spots along your arms and legs.

An acupuncturist places a needle in a patient's forearm in a quiet treatment room.

What to expect

  • Who usually comes

Adults who have been curious about acupuncture for a while and wanted a gentle first experience. Many have tried tools only first.

  • A visit, in order

About 60 minutes the first time and 40 after.

    • We talk and feel your pulse

    • We show you the needle and where it will go

    • A few needles go in shallow and come out soon

    • You rest, then we talk it over

  • What you may feel afterward

Some people feel relaxed or sleepy. A small bruise or a faint ache at a point can show up and usually fades in a day or two. Plan a quiet hour afterward.

  • Tell us first

Tell us if you are or might be pregnant, take blood thinners, have a bleeding disorder or a pacemaker or other implant, have had lymph nodes removed, or are afraid of needles.

    • Pregnancy

    • Blood thinners or a bleeding disorder

    • A pacemaker or implant

    • Lymph nodes removed

    • Fear of needles

  • How many visits

We suggest a short run of visits close together, then fewer. It is a plan we make with you and change as you go. You are never asked to prepay.

  • What it does not do

This does not replace your doctor or your medicines. Never stop or change a medicine on your own; talk to the person who prescribed it. Call 911 for chest pain, trouble breathing, sudden weakness or numbness, or the worst headache of your life.
